Say this for the NCAA. The people who sit behind desks in Indianapolis and often confound basketball fans, coaches and players are thorough.

EUGENE, Ore., March 16 (UPI) -- Oregon head basketball Coach Ernie Kent has been fired, school officials said Tuesday.

Arne Duncan loves basketball. And why wouldn't he? It helped him get to Harvard. It's how he found his wife. It even played a role in his becoming Secretary of Education. "So much of what I've learned in life, I learned on a basketball court," he says. "It helped shape me. And it's been formative. It's been a love for a long, long time. It's something I still love."

Oregon has let go of Ernie Kent after 13 years as men's basketball coach at his alma mater. The dismissal has been rumored for the past two weeks, after Eugene's KVAL-TV reported that Kent had been informed he would not return as the Ducks' coach on Feb. 22.

Not every talented high school basketball player will earn a state championship trophy.

Ernie Kent, the winningest coach in Oregon history, was dismissed Tuesday after 13 seasons with his alma mater. "You may find a better basketball coach, but I don't think you'll find anybody that has the passion and love that I have for this university," said Kent, who had to pause for several moments to fight back his emotions.
